Aberdare National Park
Aberdare National Park is a scenic wildlife haven located in central Kenya, covering an area of 766 km². The park is famous for its dense forests, misty hills, and stunning waterfalls, offering a unique safari experience compared to Kenya’s savannah reserves. It is part of the Aberdare Mountain Range, which reaches heights of up to 4,001 meters (13,123 feet). The park is home to rare wildlife species, including the bongo antelope, giant forest hogs, and black leopards. Other animals commonly found here include elephants, buffalos, lions, leopards, hyenas, colobus monkeys, baboons, and bushbucks.
Aberdare National Park is also famous for its tree lodges, such as The Ark and Treetops Lodge, where visitors can observe wildlife at floodlit waterholes from the comfort of their balconies. The park features breathtaking waterfalls like Karuru Falls (the tallest waterfall in Kenya) and Chania Falls, as well as dense bamboo forests and open moorlands. The Aberdares are a significant historical site, as they served as a hideout for the Mau Mau fighters during Kenya’s struggle for independence.
Due to its cool climate and high altitude, Aberdare National Park is a popular destination for game drives, hiking, trout fishing, birdwatching, and nature photography. It is a must-visit location for those seeking serenity, adventure, and a glimpse of rare wildlife in an untouched natural setting.
